Planning and Development - Appointed Boards

Planning and Zoning Commission:
The Pottawattamie County Planning and Zoning Commission is made up of citizens appointed by the Board Of Supervisors to a 5-year term. The majority of the Commissioners reside in the unincorporated areas of the County. The Zoning Commission recommends to the Board of Supervisors amendment supplements, changes or modifications to the zoning and subdivision ordinances, as well as the Land Use Plan. Chapter 8.098 of the Pottawattamie County, Iowa Code delineates the zoning amendment procedure and how the Commission interacts with the Board of Supervisors, in addition to the provisions in the Code of Iowa which govern their actions.

The Planning and Zoning Commission meets monthly, if they have pending applications. Typically the Commission's meetings are scheduled for the third Monday of the month.


Zoning Board of Adjustment:
The Pottawattamie County, Iowa, Zoning Board of Adjustment is a quasi-judicial board made up of 5 citizens appointed by the Board of Supervisors to a 5-year term. The majority of the Board of Adjustment members reside in the unincorporated area of the County. The Board of Adjustment hears requests for variances, conditional uses and appeal of administrative decisions. The Board of Adjustment decisions are final and must be appeal to District Court within 30-days of the written decision. They are governed by provisions of the Code of Iowa and the Pottawattamie County, Iowa, Code, in Chapter 8.096.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment meets monthly, if they have pending applications. Typically the Board's meetings are scheduled for the Thursday before the 4th Friday of the month.
